(Disclosure- I read this book as a relative newbie to the subject of electronics and tube amplifiers but with advanced degrees in mathematics)This seemed to me to be a good book considering the paucity of literature on tube amplifiers but it suffers from editorial errors here and there (if you spend the time to check all the formulas) and poor graphs and diagrams.But more importantly it suffers from a lack of thoroughness in supporting all the results. Too many times Mr. Popovich simply states the result saying that that it is too complicated to derive it. This is not very useful. Why read the book if you have to derive it all yourself anyhow?The math involved here is not all that daunting. High school level at best. If you are even bothering to approach this subject, one would have to assume you have at least a college level of engineering mathematics which is way beyond anything required here.You can expect to spend considerable time filling in the blanks of things stated but not proven.It would also be better if he were more complete in the analysis of each circuit discussed including a calculation of gains, input and output impedances and Miller effect.The whole first part on basic electronic circuit theory could also be eliminated as there are lots of better texts on this and you will never learn it if this is the first source you are relying on.Despite the flaws, it is a very good book and well worth the struggle for the newbie to fill in the blank though you will, no doubt, need several other texts to supplement it.A definite recommend and the DVDs you can purchase to supplement this material are excellent!
I have bought both volume 1 & 2 and am about half way through the first volume. It is a very thorough book without going over the top. Everything follows a logical progression from basic electronic theory to components to general audio amplifiers to fundamentals of vacuum tube operation & so on. It does assume a basic understanding of electronics & high school mathematics, but that's enough to work through & build up your knowledge. Richly illustrated, with lots of real life tube circuitry & explanations on how they work. Not a book for absolute beginners, but not too overly technical to totally discourage you either! He completely covers his subject over the 2 volumes & I would recommend these to anyone who is serious in learning how these wonderful amplifies work!
This book is ok, could have been great, but this is more of a piece-meal book. Pieces of this and parts of that, only to hook you into having to buy volume 2 or 3. I have not purchased the other two books, so I don't know what is in them. It appears from the table of contents, the missing pieces from this book are in the next one. Maybe it contains more piece meal parts and designs that leave you having to buy the next volume and the next volume just to get some practicality of the designs out of it. Where is the power supply information, ohh the next volume. Where is the output transformer selection information, ohh the next volume. If you say this power supply can be used for all driver and phono amplifier stages, then the voltage of the designs should match the power supply that you say to use. If not, you should talk about how to adjust it to suit the applications. If you are going to charge 70 bucks for something, at least give enough information to complete something. He makes the argument about how people aren't honest about their equipment, but isn't honest and forthcoming enough to say that you will not be able to complete any of these projects until you read volume 2. Maybe something like "I conveniently left off the information that I am going to teach you in volume 2 from the designs." Wink Wink $ $ Wink Wink. I now see why he says in the preface that he made 10 times more money in his first year of making how to videos and books than he did his whole career making audio equipment.
This book is superb! It is overall, the best book I have encountered on tube audio. I have to acknowledge that I am not sure if this is the best introductory volume on the subject, but with a basic familiarity it will take you very far in your understanding of the subject. It is jammed packed with illustrations and diagrams that have taken me so much further than I expected. I can’t wait to read the other two volumes.
