This book is a bit like a textbook. It is a slightly dated compendium of facts about dogs stressing pack dynamics. There is a lot of information about the impact of the environment on the dog's mind during the first few months of life. Most of us come into our dog's life toward the end of this period so we have little control over their early experiences. I regret that the author showed little affection for dogs. His approach was rather clinical. It was an OK book about dog development and behavior.
Seemed to be written for someone seeking deeper information than what I was looking for. Hard to get into. Not for the average dog owner looking for some easy to read information.
This book is my all time favorite.Did you know there is a scent gland in a dogs tail? Now I know how my dalmatians took me back to camp every time I got lost! They marked the trail. Have questions about neutering and spaying good answers here. The development of a dogs mind, what affects his mind from birth. Why does my dog do certain things answers are here when I understood my dogs canine mind. All behavior questions answered here. This book will always be one of my favorite and a forever reference book. Every dog owner should know what is in this book. So many folks do not understand dog body language or the importance of proper socialization for the development of their dogs personality. Excellent chapter on aggression. Most of us truly do not understand what aggression is, the causes, what developmental age aggression starts. This book is a must for any dog owners library.
A lot about animal studies but little regarding the information I was looking for. Don't think mice and dogs brains can really be compared.
The first half of this book explains the mechanics of a dogs brain and the capabilities and functions it performs as well as how a canine processes information visually, sensory and verbally. It is pretty dry but is well worth the effort as it primes you for the second half which deals with common specific problems (8 different types of Aggression, Submissive Behavior, Fearful Behavior, Training Issues etc) and their underlying causes and ways of successfully overcoming them. Practical advice, very insightful and easy to understand.
I read a bunch of books on training and dog behavior before I got my corgi puppy, and this was by far the best. It is comprehensive and scientific. I love that he isn't just making assumptions about why dogs do things based on observation because correlations is not causation! Instead he draws relationships between dog behavior and their physiology and neurology. I also enjoyed how he related dog physiology and neurology to human, it gave me some insights into what experiences are probably similar for dogs, and what experiences are completely different. I used to work at a pet store and was able to solve many peoples doggie problems based on information I learned from this book.I will say, if you are looking for a training guide, this is not what you are looking for. If you are looking to understand you dog in a meaningful but also scientific way, this book is perfect!
Well written, thorough coverage of the physiology and psychology of canine minds. Very useful information for dog owners or those contemplating becoming dog owners. Easy to l9cate major sections and subsets within any chapter for easy reference. Some of the vocabulary is too mecically oriented for the lay person and would benefit from insertion of common language in parenthesis. Overall, this was a very enjoyable and interesting book.
This is without a doubt the best book I have ever read on dog behavior.Written by a veterinarian, the first part of the book is actually a preface to the explanation of dog behavior - the preface is an anatomical discussion of dogs and the dog's brain, along with evolutionary explanations, all of which qualifies the remainder of the book.And the remainder of the book is amazing. Every little thing that you can ever think about dogs doing is described in this book, along with an explanation as to why they do it, and how to modify it if you wish.After reading this book you will be able to better communicate with your dog, help them through problems, deal with problems, and even just work with dogs you meet on the street.I couldn't possibly recommend this book more. I loved it!!
