This book gives quite a lot of detail in the life of a remarkable man. Even given the Victorian writing style, I was fascinated and read it clear through. Clearly the author knew and deeply respected Lord Nelson, which we need to consider when we read all the praise he heaps on the admiral's head. The thing to remember is that everyone else at the time was just as lavish with their praise. (Except for when they mentioned Lady Hamilton.)I suppose that there have been better, more objective biographies written, but this one is such a good read that it is still well worth reading.
Robert Southey wrote this biography of Horatio Lord Nelson less than a decade after Nelson's death in 1805. The early 19th Century literary style typically rambles, but at other times concentrates on fascinating insight. Also, having been published so close to the life and times of Nelson, the author assumes the reader recognizes names, places, and political alliances which lie in a veiled fog for the casual 21st Century American reader. Perhaps a more modern "history" would be appropriate for many. The Life of Nelson is still none the less, fascinating.
Southey's "Life of Horatio Lord Nelson" takes some effort to read due to the time it was written, with many nautical terms to puzzle through, along with the language of the day, but is is well worth the effort. Southey's prose lets you be transported to the action whille taking care of a full description of the political aspects then apparent. I would term it "The Unlikely Hero" for all the mishaps and uncertainties Nelson suffered along the way. To the British public he was indeed like our rock stars of today.
An older biography, it was still fun to read. It gives an early 19th Century perspective. Sailors will thrill to the technical descriptions of Nelson's strategy and tactics. War history buffs will shudder at the dangers these sailors faced. Don't expect an even-handed treatment of Nelson's messy private life, though; this book is frankly hagiagraphic. We want Nelson to be a hero, don't we? This book is a classic Nelson biography by a Poet Laureate of the U.K. What's not to like?
I haven't finished reading this yet, but so far it is an entirely fascinating tale of Lord Nelson's life. I love History and have been a long-time fan of tales of the old Royal Navy (e.g. Horatio Hornblower and Patrick O'Brian's Capt. Aubery). This biography reads like a novel, with a good pace and excitement. Nothing boring here!I recommend this book to all with similar interests as mine!
Interesting and detailed account of a national hero written not long after his final victory and death. The insight into the prevailing British attitudes about the French give a special background for the history of the times.m I wish there was more about his personal life but the quotes from Nelson's letters are a good picture of his character and personality.
I'm a fan of the Hornblower series. In fact, anything concerning wooden ships and billowing sails. I was looking forward to this read. Unfortunately it was a little disappointing as the title does not give a fair view of the contents. Perhaps it should have been more accurately titled "The Naval Times of Horatio, Lord Nelson".The book very largely skipped over his relationship with his wife and with Lady Hamilton. Byt both of these relationships helped to shape the man he was. So why minimise their importance?Nevertheless, if you want to know more about one of England's most vaunted heros, this is a very pleasant read.
This is a classic biography of Lord Nelson, interesting but maybe a little too detailed in some spots about every ship he ever served on. Despite being written long ago in an age when discretion was still practiced, I was surprised the authors did go into some detail about Horatio's affair and failed marriage. I thought it was a pretty balanced presentation--the hero and his flaws.
